A 26-year-old conductor, Salisu Mohammed, was arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, facing a one-count charge of assault.

Mohammed, a resident of Tudun Wada area in Kaduna, pleaded not guilty to the accusation.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, the incident occurred on November 22 in the Kawo area of Kaduna.

The court heard that the complainant, Hamisu Garba, had a dispute with a bus driver when Mohammed intervened, not to mediate, but to allegedly assault Garba.

The altercation began when Garba, riding his motorcycle, nearly collided with a bus that had stopped on the road to pick up a passenger.

This led to a heated exchange between Garba and the driver. Mohammed, who was reportedly present, allegedly escalated the situation by physically attacking Garba instead of helping to resolve the disagreement.

A police patrol team that arrived at the scene arrested Mohammed.

He is accused of beating Garba severely during the confrontation, an act that the prosecutor says violates Section 244 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017, which prescribes a three-year prison sentence for assault causing harm.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted Mohammed bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties of similar value.

The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to December 19 for further hearing.
