Widespread anger has erupted across social media following the circulation of a disturbing video that appears to show the fatal shooting of a restrained suspect by armed men reportedly identified as police officers in Delta State.
The footage, said to have been recorded in Effurun, has been widely shared on X and other platforms. In the clip, a man with his hands and legs bound is seen pleading for his life while repeatedly referring to the armed men confronting him as “officers.”
He is heard offering to cooperate and provide information about another suspect in exchange for his safety.
Shortly afterward, gunshots are heard. The man collapses as bystanders watch in shock. The video suggests that the body was later taken away in a vehicle marked as belonging to the police.
The incident has triggered swift condemnation online, with many Nigerians describing the act as a possible extrajudicial killing and demanding an immediate, transparent investigation.
Civil society advocates and concerned citizens have called on law enforcement authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability if wrongdoing is established.
As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command has not released an official statement addressing the video or confirming the identities of those involved.
The graphic nature of the footage has further intensified public reaction, with viewers expressing horror over the apparent killing of a bound individual who was pleading for mercy.
Observers say the development underscores ongoing concerns about alleged human rights violations and the need for stronger oversight of security operations.
Authorities are expected to respond as pressure mounts for answers, while calls continue for a thorough probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred the officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, responsible for the shooting to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence from members of the public regarding the suspect.
He alleged that the deceased was intercepted while attempting to convey a parcel reportedly containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
The Command said the officer has been taken into custody as investigations continue, with authorities assuring that disciplinary measures will be determined after a full review of the incident.
