Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, is reportedly preparing to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives for Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, amid major political realignments within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move signals a likely shift from his earlier ambition to become Governor of Lagos State, following emerging consensus within key party structures and consultations involving top political stakeholders.

Obasa had initially positioned himself as a frontline contender for the Lagos governorship race. He was said to have embarked on extensive consultations across the state, leveraging the influence of the powerful Mandate Group, a political structure widely associated with President Bola Tinubu.

His strategy was reportedly aimed at consolidating grassroots support and strengthening his visibility ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.

However, political sources within the APC in Lagos indicate that the dynamics changed following internal party deliberations that led to the emergence of Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred governorship candidate.

After the governorship slot became less viable, Obasa was said to have shifted attention to the Lagos West Senatorial District, where he considered challenging incumbent Senator Idiat Adebule.

That plan, however, reportedly faced resistance from influential party stakeholders who backed Adebule’s return, citing her political relevance and representation of women from the South-West in the Senate.

The pushback effectively stalled the senatorial ambition, prompting further consultations within the party hierarchy.

Following additional internal discussions, it was gathered that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu advised Obasa to step down from both the governorship and senatorial considerations and instead focus on a House of Representatives seat.

He was reportedly encouraged to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency seat currently held by Dr Wale Ahmed.

Party insiders say the advice was part of broader efforts to balance political interests within Lagos APC and manage succession planning ahead of 2027.

Since the reported directive, Obasa has allegedly intensified quiet political consultations within Agege and its environs, engaging party leaders, community stakeholders, and grassroots mobilisers.

His campaign structure is believed to be gradually taking shape, with early groundwork aimed at consolidating support ahead of the primaries.

Analysts say the developments reflect ongoing strategic repositioning within Lagos APC, where key political actors are being realigned ahead of the 2027 elections to avoid internal conflict and maintain party dominance in the state.

They also note that Obasa’s potential shift to the House of Representatives could strengthen APC’s legislative base while preserving his influence within the party’s power structure in Lagos.
