ASUU, Banks, electricity workers, LG employees comply with NLC, TUC national strike

Several unions in the network of the Organised Labour, on Tuesday complied with the nationwide strike mobilised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), which commenced on Tuesday, November 14.

Among the unions that joined the national strike on Tuesday are National Union of Electricity Employees, Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers, National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees, National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has also directed all lecturers to join the national strike convened by the Organised Labour across the country.

The TUC President, Festus Osifo, had in a media interaction on Monday, decalred that the national strike would proceed except “government at all levels wake up to their responsibilities”.

The NLC and TUC have called the national strike to protest the police brutality on the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1.

The police whisked Ajaero away from the NLC secretariat in Owerri, Imo State, to an unknown destination where he was brutalised.
Meanwhile, the Inpsector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered thorough investigation into the alleged brutalisation of the NLC President by the police in Owerri, Imo State.

The federal government ignored resolving the lingering labour dispute, opted for a court order to restrain the Organised Labour and the affiliate unions from the national strike.

The NLC and TUC, on Tuesday, insisted on proceeding on the national strike.

According to the NLC, on a facebook, message, “For the union makes us strong, solidarity forever, we want justice now!!!!”
