The Manager of Chelsea club in the English Premiership League, Thomas Tuchel, after the 3-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday, called the attention of a striker in his team, Timo Werner, on the need to be conscious of VAR in premiership matches. Werner had scored many goals during the last season but several of the goals were cancelled by VAR decisions. Werner scored a goal in the 3-1 defeat of Southampton by the London club on Saturday.
Werner scored in the second half with six minutes to full-time at Stamford Bridge. The first half had ended 1-1. Werner converted a perfect pass from Cesar Azpilicueta in the 18-yard box to restore Chelsea’s lead. This is his first goal of the season.
Southampton’s striker, Ward-Prowse, got a red card in the 76th minute of the game after a rough tackle on the newly introduced Chelsea defender into the game, Jorginho.
Chelsea boss had remarked after the match: “We are all relieved, him and me, and the whole club. Every time he scores, we have the feeling there is a VAR decision to take it away from him, there have been a lot of very narrow decisions.”
Ben Chilwell scored a last-minute goal to consolidate Chelsea’s lead and also recover the penalty he caused Chelsea towards the end of the first that made Southampton drew level.
Chelsea currently tops the English Premier League table with 16 points, pending the result of Sunday’s match between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Chelsea have two points clear from Liverpool which has 14 points but will be playing host to Manchester City, which has 13 points, this Sunday.
