In a deadly pre-dawn raid on Sunday, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a brazen attack on a Nigerian military base in Izge village, located in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in the deaths of an unspecified number of soldiers.

The attack, which occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m., was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Reuben Kavongiya.

In a statement issued to journalists, Captain Kavongiya stated that the insurgents attempted to overrun the formation but were successfully repelled by the troops.

According to a security source who requested anonymity, the insurgents intended to overtake the camp and seize military hardware before they were pushed back in a fierce confrontation with Nigerian soldiers.

“Their intention was to loot weapons, but the soldiers stood their ground and forced them to retreat,” the source disclosed.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Chairman of Gwoza Local Government Area, Hon. Abba Timta, revealed that while there were casualties on the side of the Nigerian Army, many more insurgents were neutralized during the exchange.

“Yes, soldiers were unfortunately killed during the attack, but there were significantly higher casualties among the Boko Haram fighters. Many of them fled with gunshot wounds,” he said.

Eyewitness accounts from residents of Gwoza suggest that local vigilantes and hunters played a critical role in the defense of the military base.

“We heard about the attack in Izge. People are saying that Boko Haram came in large numbers, but thanks to the joint effort of local hunters, vigilantes, and the military, they were repelled,” a resident recounted.

Izge and surrounding areas have remained flashpoints in the ongoing conflict with Boko Haram, a terrorist group responsible for numerous deadly attacks in northeastern Nigeria.

Security operations in the region remain active as efforts continue to dismantle insurgent strongholds and restore peace.
