The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away, bringing an end to a brief but notable reign marked by dignity and tradition.
The revered monarch died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne on July 12, 2024, served as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
His coronation by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, followed the passing of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun, and marked the continuation of Ibadan’s centuries-old succession system rooted in seniority and hierarchy.
Though his reign lasted just one year, Oba Olakulehin was widely respected for his wisdom, calm leadership, and dedication to the preservation of Yoruba customs and values. His tenure witnessed efforts to strengthen unity among traditional councils and deepen the cultural identity of Ibadanland.
Born in 1935, the late monarch had a long and distinguished life prior to his ascension.

A respected community leader and elder statesman, Oba Olakulehin was a key figure in the Olubadan-in-Council for many years and had held the title of Balogun of Ibadanland before rising to the throne.
Condolences have begun to pour in from traditional rulers, government officials, and citizens across Oyo State and beyond, as the city of Ibadan enters a period of mourning.
The Oyo State Government is expected to make a formal announcement regarding funeral arrangements and the transition process for selecting a new Olubadan in line with established tradition.
Oba Owolabi Olakulehin is survived by children, grandchildren, and numerous admirers who regard his life as one of service, honor, and dedication to his people.
