Embattled human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has expressed unwavering determination to face his ongoing legal trial, emphasizing his preparedness to confront the charges leveled against him.

Farotimi, who took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, likened his stance to that of a warrior ready for battle, declaring that his “battle axes” were sharpened and his “guns primed.”

In a series of posts, the outspoken activist stated, “I am strong enough to rumble unruffled against principalities and powers, but I am human enough to retain the capacity to shed tears of joy in appreciation of the grace of God, expressed in the concerted efforts of fellow victims. My battle axes are newly sharpened, my guns primed, I am ready to war.”

Farotimi’s comments have drawn mixed reactions from legal experts and public commentators. Speaking on the case, human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olumide Ajayi, noted, “Mr. Farotimi’s statements reflect his resolve to defend his rights within the ambit of the law. This case is pivotal in defining the boundaries of free speech and defamation in Nigeria.”

The activist also expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating, “My resolve was NEVER tested, but I was waiting for the next round of the fight to commence. I KNEW that the first round had been lost by those responsible for my imprisonment.”

Farotimi’s legal troubles began when he was arrested over allegations of defaming Afe Babalola, a prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).

The charges stem from statements allegedly made by the activist that were deemed injurious to the reputation of the esteemed legal luminary.

A few weeks ago, the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti granted Farotimi bail in the sum of N30 million. After meeting the bail conditions, he was released from custody. His case has since sparked widespread debate about the limits of freedom of expression and the role of public figures in addressing criticism.

Commenting on the societal implications of the case, media analyst Dr. Tayo Ogunleye observed, “Farotimi’s trial underscores a growing tension in Nigeria’s civic space.

Activists and public intellectuals must balance their right to free speech with the need to avoid libelous statements. However, the judicial system must also protect citizens from harassment under the guise of defamation claims.”

On the other hand, some supporters of Farotimi argue that his arrest was politically motivated, designed to silence a critical voice in the human rights sphere.

A protester, who preferred anonymity, said, “This is not just about Farotimi; it’s about the freedom of every Nigerian to speak truth to power without fear.”

As the trial progresses, all eyes remain on Farotimi, who has vowed to use the courtroom as a platform to advocate for justice and transparency.

His resolve and readiness to confront the allegations signal a contentious legal battle ahead, one that may set significant precedents for free speech and defamation in Nigeria’s judiciary.

The next hearing date for the case is eagerly anticipated by both supporters and critics, as it promises to be a landmark moment in the intersection of human rights, activism, and the law.
