Dele Farotimi vow to remain steadfast amid defamation trial
Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights advocate, has vowed to remain steadfast as he faces a legal battle over alleged defamation.
Farotimi was released from a correctional center in Ekiti State on December 24 after meeting the conditions for his bail.
The activist is being prosecuted on a 14-count charge of defamation, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Among the allegations, the police have accused him of “criminally defaming” Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in his book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The book has sparked controversy, with authorities claiming it contains defamatory statements about the revered legal luminary.
Despite the legal hurdles, Farotimi has expressed unwavering resolve. In a cryptic post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, he dismissed fears of being silenced or destroyed.

“Tomorrow will be ‘when we kill him.’ They then use rumors to ruin him,” he wrote. “A god that the god of thunder cannot kill. Is the power of the god of thunder not enough to destroy? I face no fears. I have none.”
Farotimi’s trial spans two courts, reflecting the weight of the allegations against him. On December 9, the Federal High Court in Ekiti granted him bail in the sum of ₦50 million, with one surety, following a separate 12-count charge related to cybercrime filed by the Inspector-General of Police.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with supporters of the activist emphasizing his contributions to human rights advocacy and his critique of Nigeria’s justice system.
Farotimi’s ongoing legal battle raises critical questions about freedom of speech, the role of public intellectuals, and the boundaries of defamation in a democratic society.
As the trials proceed, Farotimi remains defiant, asserting his innocence and commitment to his principles.
