The Edo State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who reportedly collapsed and died during an altercation with police officers at a checkpoint in Benin City.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday while Eboigbodin and his wife were driving through Upper Sakponba Road. According to eyewitness accounts, the police stopped the vehicle to inspect its documents, which Eboigbodin provided.
A source revealed that discrepancies in the paperwork led to a heated exchange. The police allegedly accused Eboigbodin of driving a stolen vehicle and insisted he drive to their station. Eboigbodin reportedly refused, demanding clarification of his alleged offence.
As tensions escalated, Eboigbodin, visibly distressed, suddenly collapsed.
Witnesses claimed that the officers fled the scene, leaving his distraught wife to rush him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Edo Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Moses Yamu, expressed shock and concern over the incident.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Umoru P. Ozigi, has directed a thorough investigation, with a focus on potential unprofessional conduct by the officers involved.
“The Command received with great concern the news of the death of Comrade Eboigbodin. The Commissioner of Police has ordered an immediate investigation to ensure justice is served,” Yamu stated.
The CP extended condolences to the widow, family, and associates of the late labour leader, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the cordial relationship between the police, civil society organizations, and labour unions in the state.

Labour and civil society groups have condemned the incident, calling for accountability and justice.
A representative of the Edo State NLC, Comrade Grace Igbinovia, described Eboigbodin’s death as a “grave loss” to the labour movement and demanded swift action to prevent similar occurrences.
“This is a tragic reminder of the need for accountability within the police force. Comrade Eboigbodin was a man of integrity who served the people of Edo diligently. His death must not be in vain,” Igbinovia stated.
The incident has reignited concerns over alleged misconduct at police checkpoints in Nigeria. Rights activist Barrister Felix Edokpolor called for reforms, noting that checkpoints are increasingly becoming flashpoints for altercations with civilians.
“This case highlights systemic issues in policing. Beyond this investigation, there is an urgent need for widespread reforms to restore public trust in the force,” Edokpolor said.
The Edo Police Command has pledged to ensure a transparent investigation and uphold the rule of law. The outcome of the probe is expected to address public concerns and provide justice for the late Eboigbodin’s family.
As Edo State mourns the loss of a prominent labour leader, the incident underscores the importance of professional conduct and accountability in law enforcement.
