Police suspend officers over N43.16m theft in Abuja Airport operation
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the suspension of four officers implicated in the theft of N43.16 million from N74.95 million confiscated during an unauthorized operation at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The decision, made public on Monday, reflects the force’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
According to the police, the officers were part of a team involved in an unsanctioned arrest at the airport, during which N74.95 million was seized.
However, a subsequent investigation revealed that only N31.79 million was officially recorded, with the remaining N43.16 million unaccounted for. This discrepancy led to the suspension of the officers pending a thorough investigation by the force’s disciplinary committee.
The identities of the implicated officers have not been disclosed.
Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun emphasized that the police force does not condone corruption or misconduct, and he reiterated the commitment to upholding ethical standards within the organization.
“The actions of these officers undermine public trust and the integrity of the force,” Egbetokun stated, assuring the public that due process would be followed and justice would be served.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria, with calls for more stringent oversight of law enforcement activities. Civil society groups and anti-corruption advocates have stressed the importance of a transparent investigation and accountability for those involved.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about corruption within Nigerian state institutions. Observers believe that the outcome of this investigation could serve as a critical test for the police force’s commitment to reform and professionalism.
The Inspector-General reinforced that no officer, regardless of rank, will be spared if found guilty of misconduct or betraying public trust.
As the disciplinary committee continues its investigation, the public eagerly awaits the final outcome, which could set a significant precedent for tackling corruption within the police force.
