The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has imposed a ban on scavengers operating within the territory, effective from January 14, 2025.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Olatunji Disu, following a briefing with newsmen after the FCT Security Committee Meeting in Abuja on Monday.

Disu explained that scavengers will be restricted to operating only at designated dumpsites located on the outskirts of the city and in suburban areas.

He added that all security agencies in the territory have been tasked with ensuring the strict enforcement of this ban.

“The scavengers will only be allowed to operate at dumpsites in the suburbs.

All security agencies are to ensure that this order is enforced beginning January 14,” he said.

Additionally, Disu announced a two-week suspension on the operation of pantaker markets across the FCT, starting Tuesday.

Pantaker markets, which deal in the sale of second-hand items, scrap iron, and used household appliances, will be suspended to allow security agencies time to profile the market operators and ensure that only legitimate businesses continue to operate.

The police commissioner also addressed the growing concern over vandalism of public infrastructure.

He revealed that anyone caught vandalizing public property would be charged with economic sabotage and, where applicable, attempted murder.

Disu criticized the light punishments for such offences, noting that the current penalties often led to repeat offenses.

“The punishment for these crimes is so minimal that we end up recycling the criminals.

The activities of vandals are dangerous, especially when they remove manhole covers, which can cause fatalities, particularly for drivers at night,” Disu said.

He called on residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities, emphasizing the importance of protecting public infrastructure for the safety and well-being of all FCT residents.

“We all share responsibility for safeguarding our collective property.

We urge everyone to report any suspicious activities and help protect government infrastructures,” he added.
