The Federal Government has announced plans to upgrade the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, Borno State, to address recurring flooding issues in the region.

The decision follows a recent assessment of the flood situation that has displaced residents and caused significant damage.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, during a visit to Maiduguri on Thursday, emphasized the importance of the dam upgrade.

He stated that the project is non-negotiable and that strict measures will be in place to ensure its timely completion and quality.

A team of experts from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is currently on-site to assess the dam’s condition and recommend necessary improvements.

The ministry also plans to provide sanitation kits and water treatment facilities to those affected by the floods.

Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum expressed gratitude for the federal government’s prompt response and highlighted the need for a comprehensive study of the dam’s capacity and flood forecasting systems.

He also emphasized the importance of addressing desertification and investing in clean energy and irrigation to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
