Five surprising health benefits of beer you should know
Spread The News

A recent review of scientific studies by Piedmont Healthcare suggests that moderate beer consumption may offer several health benefits, including lowering bad cholesterol, improving brain function, strengthening bones, and reducing the risk of kidney stones, Hunter Boyce reports for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The survey highlights five potential health advantages of beer, emphasizing moderation and caution in consumption.

  1. Beer is Nutritionally Rich

While wine is often praised for its antioxidants, beer contains comparable amounts, albeit from different sources.

The flavonoids in barley and hops differ from those in grapes, but they still provide antioxidant benefits. Beer is also higher in protein and vitamin B than wine, and it contains essential minerals such as iron, calcium, and phosphates, along with dietary fiber. Piedmont notes that these nutrients make beer “the most nutritious alcoholic drink” when compared to other alcoholic beverages.

  1. Reduces Bad Cholesterol

Beer is rich in soluble fiber, which can help lower LDL cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad” cholesterol. Soluble fiber promotes healthy blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels, contributing to overall cardiovascular health.

  1. 3. Supports Brain Health

Moderate beer consumption has been associated with improved cognitive function, particularly in middle-aged adults. Piedmont reports that increased alcohol intake within moderate limits correlated with better brain performance in study participants.

Additionally, hops—a key ingredient in beer—contain xanthohumol, a flavonoid believed to slow memory degradation and protect brain cells from oxidative stress linked to dementia.

  1. May Strengthen Bones

Beer contains dietary silicon in the form of orthosilicic acid (OSA), which may aid bone growth and connective tissue development.

Preliminary research suggests that this component could help reduce the risk of osteoporosis, although scientists caution that more studies are needed to confirm beer’s direct impact on bone health.

  1. Potential Kidney Stone Prevention

Beers with high hop content, such as pale ales and IPAs, are rich in phytochemicals that may support kidney health and help prevent kidney stone formation.

Experts Urge Caution

Despite these findings, Piedmont Healthcare emphasizes that physicians generally do not recommend alcohol consumption for health purposes due to the risk of overconsumption.

“The benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have not been generally endorsed by physicians for fear that heavy consumers may consider any message as a permissive license to drink in excess,” the survey noted.

Individuals are encouraged to consult their doctors about personal health history and consumption habits before considering beer for potential health benefits.
