Jonathan Congratulates Malawi on Peaceful Election, Hails Chakwera’s Statesmanship

In a statement issued on Friday, Jonathan extended warm felicitations to President-elect, Prof. Peter Arthur Mutharika, on his victory at the polls. He also commended the incumbent, President Lazarus Chakwera, for what he called “a rare display of sportsmanship” in conceding defeat even before the final results were announced.

“As Africans, our democracy endures when those we choose lead with integrity, humility, and respect for institutional processes,” Jonathan said.
He urged the incoming administration to be magnanimous in victory and to build on the culture of tolerance and political unity that has brought global attention to Malawi’s democratic journey.
Jonathan further noted that Malawi’s example was not only a national triumph but also a continental lesson in democratic consolidation. “May this moment inspire other nations to uphold the sanctity of the vote, accept outcomes gracefully, and always put the interests of the people above political ambition,” he added.
The former Nigerian leader, widely respected for conceding defeat in Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, described Malawi’s poll as “a beacon of hope and a lesson in democratic maturity for Africa.”
