Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in London at approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday, July 13, 2025, following a prolonged illness.
The passing of the revered leader, who served both as a military Head of State and a democratically elected President, was officially announced by his family spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.
According to the official statement shared by Mallam Garba Shehu on Sunday, July 13, 2025, and reiterated by Bashir Ahmad, OON, the family confirmed: “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIR RAJI’UN.
The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, into a Fulani family, Muhammadu Buhari was the 23rd child of his father. His illustrious career saw him lead Nigeria twice. He first served as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
Decades later, he returned to power as Nigeria’s civilian president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.

Throughout his public life, President Buhari was widely known for his unwavering stance on anti-corruption and his dedicated efforts to stabilize the nation’s economy.
The Presidency has swiftly reacted to the news of Buhari’s demise. In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Bola Tinubu has conveyed his deepest condolences to Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow.
As a mark of profound respect for the departed leader, President Tinubu has ordered flags at half-staff across the nation.
Furthermore, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been directed to immediately proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany former President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Further details regarding the burial arrangements are expected to be released by the family in due course, in accordance with Islamic rites.
