Goodluck Jonathan denies withdrawing from 2027 presidential race
ormer President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted claims that he has abandoned plans to run in the 2027 presidential election, labeling recent media reports as false and misleading.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports suggesting he has abandoned any ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting he has not ruled himself out of the race.
This clarification followed a report published by Newsweek Nigeria on Friday, which alleged that Jonathan had rejected mounting pressure to run, reportedly stating he would not allow himself to be “used against Southern unity.”
Reacting to the report, Jonathan’s cousin and media aide, Azibaola Robert, took to his verified Facebook page to debunk the story.
He described the claims as “fake” and urged the public to disregard them. Robert further emphasized that the unnamed “aide of Jonathan” quoted in the report “does not exist.”
“The former president has made it clear that he would not yield to calls not to run, since those making such admonitions had selfish motives,” Robert stated.

While Jonathan has not made any formal declaration regarding the 2027 race, political observers note that he has initiated quiet consultations across the country seen by many as a strategic move towards a political comeback.
The former president’s potential return to the political arena continues to stir debate, particularly among Southern political blocs, where his candidacy is viewed as both symbolic and influential.
