Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has called on journalists to uphold the highest standards of ethics in their practice, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the code of ethics for journalism in Nigeria.

The governor made this statement during a State dinner for members of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) held in Bauchi.

He declared that the era of “envelope journalism” has come to an end, stressing that journalists must ensure transparency and accountability in their work.

“You must maintain high standards for the industry to remain relevant,” Gov. Mohammed urged the media professionals present. “Your role in holding leaders accountable is vital, and it requires you to be both transparent and accountable in your duties.”

Mohammed also highlighted the importance of community engagement in broadcasting, urging radio and television stations to reflect the needs and aspirations of their local audiences.

He acknowledged the growing challenges faced by journalists, such as inadequate funding and the rapid pace of technological changes, emphasizing the need for continuous training and capacity building.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the broadcast industry, pledging to provide the necessary resources to foster its growth and development.

He also pointed to the sector’s potential to generate employment and contribute to economic growth, urging investors to explore opportunities within the industry and assuring them of his government’s full support and incentives to attract investment.

In addition to the broadcast industry, Gov. Mohammed spoke about broader economic initiatives, including the implementation of a solid mineral policy and efforts to promote agriculture to strengthen Bauchi State’s economy.

Malam Yusuf Isa, BON Chairman for Zone ‘B’, thanked Gov. Mohammed for hosting the 80th assembly of the organization in Bauchi, reiterating the commitment of BON to strengthen the broadcasting sector in Nigeria.

The dinner was attended by several prominent figures, including the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ali M. Ali; Communication Scholar and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Kashere, Prof. Umaru Pate; and other notable figures from the media industry.

The 80th General Assembly of BON, which began on Tuesday in Bauchi, is centered around the theme: “Broadcast Media in the Era of Economic Downturn: The Way Forward.”
