The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with media organisations and other key stakeholders to effectively address the multifaceted migration challenges facing the country.

Ms. Sharon Dimanche, the Chief of Mission for IOM Nigeria, emphasized this during the agency’s inaugural media breakfast with journalists held on Thursday in Abuja. She stated that enhanced knowledge sharing regarding IOM’s strategic priorities would facilitate more effective solutions to migration issues through robust media collaboration.

“IOM’s role is to simplify these initiatives and partner with key stakeholders to tackle migration issues head-on,” she said.

Dimanche underscored the critical role of communication as a foundational element in addressing migration. She stressed the importance of empowering young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions regarding migration.

“How do we train and prepare our youthful population? Do they have the right skills and knowledge? How do we ensure they have proper visas, so that those migrating from one region to another can do so safely and legally?” she queried.

She further highlighted that ensuring safe migration is a shared responsibility, not only of countries of origin but also of destination countries, describing it as a mutually beneficial outcome.

Referring to initiatives like “Europe-Africa for Africa,” Dimanche explained that their objective is to increase awareness about available visa options and promote sustainable migration solutions.

“When we work closely with the media and the Federal Government, we can provide young people with accurate and useful information. Together, we can achieve our shared goals,” she affirmed.

Dimanche acknowledged that while tackling migration challenges demands strategic interventions, success is attainable through concerted collaboration. “All hands must be on deck to promote safe migration, which benefits everyone,” she added.

She also commended the Nigerian government for its proactive stance against irregular migration and pledged the continued support of the IOM.

“We can contribute by helping intra-African migrants access resources in their own countries and ensure that migration is conducted safely. There is political will in Nigeria, and we’re here to support the government, media, and private sector,” she concluded.

Dimanche outlined IOM’s strategic focus on partnering to address cross-border challenges, promoting inclusive migration policies, and raising public awareness on the significance of safe migration practices in Nigeria.
