Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre after fulfilling the stringent bail conditions set by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja.
The spokesperson for the FCT Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Adamu Duza, confirmed Bello’s release, stating:
“Yahaya Bello has been released after meeting the bail conditions. He was released this evening. The Controller of NCoS FCT, Ajibogun Olatubosun, ensured his smooth release and adherence to all protocols.”
Bello’s bail terms, granted by Justice MaryAnne Anenih on Thursday, included a bond of ₦500 million and the provision of three sureties. Each surety is required to own property in high-value areas of Abuja, such as Maitama, Guzape, or Asokoro. Additionally, Bello was mandated to surrender his passport and seek court permission for any travel outside Nigeria.

Legal analysts have highlighted the strictness of the conditions as indicative of the gravity of the charges against Bello, emphasizing the court’s cautious approach to ensure compliance. Barrister Adebayo Ogunlade noted:
“These conditions underscore the judiciary’s efforts to balance granting bail while mitigating risks of absconding, especially in high-profile cases.”
Human rights advocate Aisha Mohammed added: “The case sets a precedent for applying stringent measures to prominent individuals, ensuring they remain accountable during their legal proceedings.”
Bello’s release marks a significant development in the case, with attention now turning to the judicial process that lies ahead.
