Showunmi unveils alternative to APC, Tinubu, advocates people-driven leadership for 2027

The Convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), Otunba Segun Showunmi, has emphasized the need for ordinary Nigerians to spearhead the selection of the nation’s next president.

Speaking during a Town Hall meeting in Kano on Thursday, Showunmi introduced “The Alternative,” a platform aimed at bridging the gap between citizens and their leaders.

According to Showunmi, the initiative seeks to identify a consensus candidate from the people, who will then be presented to a political party for campaigns. This approach, he argued, is essential to counter the influence of wealthy politicians who undermine democracy.

 “All we have today are moneybag politicians who suppress democracy with their stolen wealth,” Showunmi stated. “The people must dialogue, choose wisely, and ensure a quality candidate emerges in 2027. This will prevent politicians from stealing democracy and keeping us poor.”

Showunmi further cautioned Nigerians against selling their votes, emphasizing that trading electoral power for material goods only perpetuates bad governance. “Stop short changing yourself by selling your vote for corn, noodles, or salt. We must take back our democracy,” he urged.

The Kano event marked the regional launch of NOMC, also known as “The Alternative.” Since its national inauguration in Abuja on November 25, 2024, the movement has expanded to Jos, Bauchi, and other parts of the North Central and Northwest regions.

Showunmi also warned against the dangers of a one-party state, accusing politicians of creating chaos within major political parties to limit citizens’ electoral choices.

“The Alternative is here to ensure Nigerians have a voice and that the next election is truly democratic,” he said.

During the meeting, Hon. Jafaar Sani Bello, a former Kano governorship aspirant, called for the rejection of religious and ethnic sentiments in leadership selection. “Leadership is not about religion or tribe. It’s time we elect leaders with the people’s interest at heart,” he said.

Saidu Bello, National Coordinator of Atiku Abubakar’s Forum, urged youths to study Nigeria’s history to make informed decisions. “Understanding our past will help us choose better leaders for the future,” he remarked.

In her closing remarks, Mrs. Tariere Fiebai, a member of The Alternative, expressed hope for a brighter future for Nigeria, praying that the nation’s next generation inherits a more prosperous and united country.

With its grassroots focus, The Alternative seeks to empower citizens and ensure that leadership in 2027 is truly representative of the people’s will. By emphasizing dialogue, accountability, and inclusivity, the movement aims to restore faith in Nigeria’s democratic process and foster a brighter future for all.
