Minister earns ₦4.05m, Minister of State ₦3.92m accommodation allowance

At a time that President Bola Tinubu has created more hardship on Nigerian citizens with the sudden removal of petrol subsidy and the consequential speedy increase in prices, each of the new ministers in the Tinubu administration earns N405 million as accommodation allowance, while each of the junior ministers, Ministers of State, earns N3.92 million, annually.

According to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC, 2009), below is the accommodation allowance for each Minister & Minister of State:

“Minister: ₦4.05 million
“Minister of State: ₦3.92 million.”

Meanwhile, the President has appointed a committee on tax reform as part of the ways to boost revenue generation for the government.

While the hardship persists, the President had disbursed N5 billion to each state of the Federation and the FCT for pallaitive intervention on the subsidy removal.

Recently, there was disquiet across the country after the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced that the Clerk of the National Assembly has transferred money to the accounts of the respective senators to enable them enjoy their holidays which ends on September 25.

The 109 senators were later reported to have received N2 million for holidays allowance, amounting to N218 million disbursed for holidays allowances.

Further more, there is still disquiet that President Tinubu bloated the federal cabinet with nomination of 48 ministers among who 45 were confirmed by the senate; at a time of complaints of high cost of governance in Nigeria.

The 45 confirmed ministers exclude the 20 special advisers initially appointed by the President among who about two were elevated to ministers.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari had worked with 42 ministers.

Meanwhile, the accommodation allowance of the ministers and the deputies put together will run into hundreds of millions of Naira, excluding other allowances and extra-legal fiscal “votes”.  This is as the President is yet to replace the three rejected ministerial nominees by the Senate.
