The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook predicting intense sunshine, dust haze, and thunderstorms across various regions of the country from Sunday to Tuesday.

In a statement released on Saturday, NiMet advised Nigerians to prepare for fluctuating weather patterns, with specific warnings for those with respiratory conditions due to the presence of dust particles.

According to the forecast, light dust haze is expected in northern Nigeria on Sunday, which could reduce visibility to between 2km and 5km. While sunny skies with patchy clouds are expected in the North Central region, areas in the south may experience isolated thunderstorms.

NiMet noted, “In the southern region, there are slim chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the morning, with moderate rains and thunderstorms anticipated over Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Lagos in the afternoon and evening.”

The agency predicts that Monday’s weather will bring similar patterns, with slight dust haze persisting in northern Nigeria, while the North Central region is expected to have predominantly sunny skies.

Thunderstorms and moderate rains are anticipated in coastal cities of the south during the afternoon and evening.

For Tuesday, the northern region is forecasted to experience more dust haze throughout the day. The North Central will likely see mostly sunny skies with few clouds, while coastal cities in the south may again encounter thunderstorms with moderate rains in the later hours.

NiMet also urged the public to take precautions due to the potential health impacts of dust.

“The agency advises people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to be cautious, as dust particles are suspended in the air,” the advisory stated.

Areas likely to experience thunderstorms may also see strong winds preceding the rains, and NiMet recommended that the public follow safety advisories from local authorities.

The agency further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to aid in flight planning and urged residents to stay informed by following NiMet updates via their website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
