A catastrophic midair collision between a passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday night has sent emergency teams scrambling to assess the extent of the devastation.
Federal aviation officials confirmed the accident, calling it one of the most significant aviation disasters in U.S. airspace in over a decade.
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. ET as an American Airlines-affiliated aircraft operated by PSA Airlines approached the runway for landing. The aircraft, identified as Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ-700, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members when it collided with the military helicopter.
The U.S. Army confirmed that the Black Hawk helicopter was operating out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, with three soldiers on board. The mission details of the helicopter were not immediately disclosed.
A webcam positioned at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts captured footage of what appeared to be the helicopter colliding with the passenger jet at low altitude, followed by a sudden explosion. Radar tracking data suggests the passenger jet may have crashed into the Potomac River.
Eyewitnesses in the area reported hearing a deafening explosion and seeing a fiery streak in the night sky. “It was like a fireball descending rapidly,” one witness near the Arlington waterfront stated. “You could hear the impact reverberate.”

DC Fire and EMS, along with the Metropolitan Police Department and multiple other agencies, immediately launched a large-scale search and rescue operation in the Potomac River. Emergency responders, including helicopters and fireboats, were deployed to locate survivors.
“There are multiple partner agencies coordinating an intensive search and rescue operation,” a joint statement from DC Fire and EMS and the Metropolitan Police Department read.
American Airlines issued a statement expressing deep concern for those on board: “Our thoughts are with the passengers and crew of Flight 5342. We are in contact with authorities and are assisting with emergency response efforts.”
President Donald Trump addressed the nation following the incident, stating: “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident that just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”
The airspace around Reagan National Airport is notoriously complex due to its proximity to key government buildings, with frequent military and police helicopter activity. Aviation experts have long warned of the risks associated with the airport’s challenging flight paths and busy air traffic.
If casualty numbers confirm significant losses, this incident could be one of the most severe aviation disasters in the U.S. since the 2009 Colgan Air Flight 3407 crash near Buffalo, New York, which claimed 50 lives.
Authorities have yet to release an official report on the number of casualties, but the scale of the response suggests a major disaster. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are en route to the scene to begin an extensive inquiry into the cause of the crash.
