Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has raised serious concerns over the growing harassment and detention of journalists in Nigeria, warning that the country could deteriorate into a “Banana Republic” if such trends persist.
Obi’s warning comes in light of recent developments surrounding PIDOM Nigeria, a whistleblower who had recently disappeared, sparking widespread concern.
Investigative journalist David Hundeyin revealed on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that PIDOM Nigeria, known online as #PIDOMNIGERIA, had been detained by the Nigerian Police Force and was being held at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja.
The police claim that PIDOM Nigeria was arrested for compromising government integrity by leaking classified documents and engaging in cyber-related offenses.
Reacting to these events, Obi took to his X account to criticize what he described as a disturbing trend of government repression against journalists.
He emphasized the crucial role of investigative journalism in a democracy and condemned the ongoing harassment, abduction, and detention of journalists by government agents.

“The fundamental right to free speech is inextricably linked to the right to access information about government activities and decision-making,” Obi stated.
He stressed that the suppression of information unrelated to national security underscores the urgent need for the Freedom of Information Bill to protect democratic freedoms.
Obi expressed deep concern over the treatment of PIDOM Nigeria and called for accountability from Nigerian authorities.
He warned that if such actions continue, the country risks devolving into a state where journalists are silenced or disappear for simply doing their job—a scenario he described as unacceptable.
Earlier, pro-democracy activist Omoyele Sowore also condemned PIDOM Nigeria’s detention, attributing it to actions by the current administration.
Sowore called for the journalist’s immediate release, warning of potential harm if the situation is not addressed promptly. He also demanded the release of all protesters detained in similar circumstances across Nigeria.
Obi’s call for justice and accountability reflects growing concerns about press freedom in Nigeria, as journalists face increasing risks for their work in exposing government activities.
