The Lagos State Police Command has responded to concerns regarding the prolonged detention of Mr. Nosiru Owolabi, a suspect held for over six weeks at the Police Tactical Squad, 2nd Rainbow, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos.
The police clarified that Owolabi’s detention was carried out in compliance with a court order due to his alleged involvement in armed robbery, cultism, and violent crimes, including murder.
Amid allegations that the suspect was detained unlawfully and concerns over police remarks regarding his welfare, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, issued a statement over the weekend, defending the detention and providing clarity on the case.
“The Command understands the concerns raised, and we appreciate the feedback. However, we would like to provide clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding his arrest, detention, and investigation,” Hundeyin said.
He explained that Owolabi had been on the police wanted list for several major crimes, including armed robbery, multiple kidnappings, and other violent acts across different areas in Lagos.
“The suspect was arrested because of his direct involvement in several armed robberies, murders, violent crimes, and cultism-related activities. His detention was conducted in line with a valid court order, which authorized his extended stay in custody to allow for a thorough and discreet investigation.”
Hundeyin stressed that Owolabi’s detention was crucial to apprehending other members of his criminal network and recovering weapons he had admitted to possessing.

“The primary purpose of this detention was to track down additional suspects linked to his crimes and recover firearms and weapons still in circulation. These weapons, if not retrieved, pose a serious threat to public safety.”
Following the execution of a valid search warrant, police operatives reportedly recovered two assorted firearms from the suspect’s possession, further justifying his extended detention.
Addressing allegations that Owolabi had been held beyond the legally allowed period, Hundeyin stated that the police had obtained a remand order for his detention. However, while the Commander of the Tactical Squad admitted that the remand order had expired, he assured that efforts were being made to renew it.
The police dismissed reports that officers had shown disregard for the suspect’s well-being, emphasizing that law enforcement authorities were acting within their legal mandate to ensure justice and public safety.
Hundeyin assured the public that the Lagos State Police Command remained committed to upholding human rights while effectively tackling violent crimes.
“The Command is committed to ensuring that justice is served within the confines of the law. We will continue to provide updates as investigations progress, and we appreciate the public’s vigilance in holding law enforcement accountable,” he concluded.
