Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has expressed his disappointment after being excluded from the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award.

The 23-year-old Brazilian believes he deserved a spot on the prestigious list, which was announced by France Football.

In an interview with ESPN, Rodrygo admitted feeling upset about the omission.

“I was upset; I think I deserved it,” he said. “I don’t want to belittle the players who are there; I think they deserved it also.

But I think I had a place in the 30.”

The versatile forward suggested that his ability to play in multiple attacking positions might have hindered his chances of making the shortlist.

“Often, I’m just filling spaces,” he explained. “Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo.

That’s it. It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”

While he was overlooked, several of his Real Madrid teammates were nominated, including Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and even the retired Toni Kroos.

The winner of the Ballon d’Or will be announced on October 28th. Last season, Rodrygo played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s success, contributing 17 goals and 9 assists in 51 appearances.
