Abuja, Nigeria – The Council of South East Traditional Rulers has made a heartfelt appeal to the Federal Government for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Council’s Chairman, Igwe Samuel Asadu, voiced this request on Sunday in Abuja, emphasizing that Kanu’s freedom could significantly reduce tension in the South East region of Nigeria.

Igwe Asadu highlighted the Council’s support for various stakeholders, including South East governors, lawmakers, and the general populace, who have been advocating for Kanu’s release.

He stated, “He is our son. He has been there for a long time, despite the ups and downs with the judiciary. We back the Governors Forum and other stakeholders’ call for his release to reduce tension.”

The traditional ruler expressed hope that the government would ensure that Kanu’s release would be handled with due diligence to maintain peace and order. He suggested that a deal or measures could be put in place to facilitate this process.

According to Igwe Asadu, Kanu’s release would bring significant relief and joy to the people of the South East.

“If the president looks into that and gives him a pardon, we will be excited. It is affecting our area because of his absence. Some of the people are his die-hard fans,” he said.

He further added that the traditional rulers of the South East are continually praying for Kanu’s release, feeling the pain of both Kanu and his family. “It will be a gift if the President does that. We will come back to thank him in a big way,” Igwe Asadu concluded.
