U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles following days of escalating unrest sparked by federal immigration raids targeting undocumented migrants across California.

The deployment, announced over the weekend, marks the most significant federal military intervention in California in over three decades. It comes in response to what the White House described as “violent mobs” clashing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during ongoing deportation operations.

According to the White House, the unrest has created a volatile security situation in Los Angeles, with 118 arrests made since the raids began earlier this week, including 44 arrests on Friday alone.

“Violent mobs have attacked ICE officers and federal law enforcement agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California,” the White House said in an official statement. “The leaders of California have abdicated their responsibility to protect law-abiding citizens.”

President Trump took to his Truth Social platform to directly criticize California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, calling them “incompetent” and accusing them of failing to maintain law and order.

“The federal government will step in and solve the problem… the way it should be solved,” Trump wrote, signaling a hardline federal response to what he characterized as state-level inaction.

In a sharp rebuttal, Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the deployment as “cruel and purposefully inflammatory,” warning that a federal military presence would only worsen tensions in the state.

“Continued chaotic federal sweeps across California, to meet an arbitrary arrest quota, are as reckless as they are cruel,” Newsom stated. “Sending in troops will not bring calm—it will escalate conflict.”

Mayor Karen Bass has not yet issued a public response, but state and local officials are reportedly bracing for the impact of the military presence amid growing protests and civil unrest.

The National Guard, the oldest military branch in the U.S., typically responds to domestic emergencies such as natural disasters and civil disturbances. While National Guard troops usually operate under the authority of state governors, the president can federalize the force, as seen in this case.

This deployment is the first time a U.S. president has taken direct control of the National Guard in Los Angeles since the 1992 riots, which erupted after the acquittal of police officers involved in the brutal beating of Rodney King.

The unfolding situation has further intensified national debate over immigration policy, federal overreach, and the balance of power between state and federal governments.

As tensions continue to mount, civil rights groups and immigrant advocacy organizations have called for immediate de-escalation and legal scrutiny of the raids, which they argue are both discriminatory and destabilizing to immigrant communities.
