In what officials have described as a highly deceptive smuggling attempt, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a shipment of psychoactive substances cunningly disguised as green tea.

The discovery was announced on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, who shared a video of the seizure via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The video shows NDLEA officers unwrapping packages labeled as imported green tea, only to uncover sachets of illicit drugs concealed within.

“This consignment is a green tea import in packaging and on the outside,” Babafemi wrote. “But if you drink it, you may lose your mind because the real and undisclosed content is psychoactive substances as discovered by #ndlea_nigeria officers in one of our latest seizures. Shine your eyes.”

The intercepted shipment was packaged to resemble standard commercial tea products, a method authorities believe was intended to deceive both customs officials and consumers.

While specific details regarding the shipment’s origin, destination, or the identities of those involved were not disclosed, Babafemi confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

The agency did not immediately reveal whether any arrests had been made in connection with the seizure.

This latest bust underscores the increasing sophistication of drug traffickers operating within and outside Nigeria’s borders. It also highlights the NDLEA’s continued vigilance and evolving detection strategies under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd).

In recent years, the NDLEA has intensified efforts to disrupt drug smuggling networks through intelligence-driven operations and cross-border collaboration, seizing tons of illicit substances disguised in everyday goods ranging from food items to industrial equipment.

The agency urged members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious activity, as traffickers continue to explore new and deceptive methods to move banned substances.
