Tragedy struck the University of Ibadan (UI) community on Sunday as a 300-level student reportedly died after allegedly consuming a toxic substance suspected to be insecticide.

Sources said the incident occurred late Sunday night at Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, where the student was found in an unconscious and distressed state on the ground floor by a fellow resident.

According to reports, the student reportedly admitted to taking a substance identified as “Sniper,” a commonly misused insecticide.

The student was immediately rushed to the University of Ibadan clinic, where medical staff attempted to stabilize him before referring him to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. At UCH, he was placed on life support but, despite medical intervention, later succumbed to the poisoning.

Confirming the death on Tuesday, Funmi Adetuyibi, Public Relations Officer of UCH, said: “Yes, it is true. He was brought to the hospital. He is dead.”
