Some Twitter users have been recounting the negative effects that drivers who break traffic laws, such as those who drive against the flow of traffic in Lagos, have had on their life.
This was revealed as a result of the Lagos State government’s Thursday auction of several vehicles that were seized due to various traffic violations in the state.
A tweep, Tunde Aluko, shared the story of a personal loss as a result of a one-way driver. He said, “My uncle died after almost four years of total memory loss, he remembered nothing till his last day. He was knocked down by someone riding against traffic, if your vehicle is impounded for driving against traffic or you’re even jailed for life, zero sympathy!”
Responding to Aluko’s tweet, another Twitter user, Jumoke said, “My colleague lost her graduate son, who only came home for NYSC, to a one way driver. LASG should not only sell the car, the drivers should do some time in jail.”
A victim of a ‘one-way’ driver, Sunkanmi Shams, shared the experience of having his hand crushed weeks back.
“I almost got run over by a Danfo driving ‘one-way’ some weeks ago. Guess what? My children were in an eatery directly across the road waiting for their daddy. The bus smashed into my hand. As I was writhing in pain, I was thanking God for my life,” Shams said.
A “one-way” traffic violator caused Beejay to lose his brother. “I lost a kid brother to the same situation a few weeks earlier,” he stated. He was struck by a car traveling against the flow of traffic, suffered a skull fracture, and many injuries before dying following surgery. May he rest in peace, his soul.
In Lagos, driving against the flow of traffic can result in car confiscation and, if caught, a prison sentence for the perpetrator.
