Yobe university ASUU strike continues over unmet demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University chapter, has firmly stated that its indefinite strike, which commenced on July 11, 2025, remains in full effect.

This declaration was made by the state varsity ASUU Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Karage, in a statement issued in Damaturu today, Monday, July 28, 2025.

Dr. Karage acknowledged that the consequential adjustment for the N70,000 minimum wage was indeed implemented in July.

However, he emphasized that this alone is not enough to end the strike, as several other crucial demands of the union have yet to be addressed by the state government.

The outstanding demands, as listed by Dr. Karage, include:

• The full implementation of academic staff promotions as approved by the university council.
• The payment of all promotion arrears, dating back from 2018 to 2025.
• Payment of arrears for minimum wage consequential adjustment from 2019 to 2024.
• A 35-25 per cent salary award for Professors and other academic ranks, effective from 2023 to 2025.
• Payment of arrears for the N70,000 minimum wage from January 2024 to June 2025.

The ASUU chairman appealed for public understanding and patience, assuring that the strike would be called off once a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between the union and the Yobe State Government, clearly outlining the fulfillment of these demands.

The ongoing industrial action has brought academic activities at the university to a halt, raising concerns among students and parents about the continuity of their education.
