A group of 4,449 police officers has taken legal action against the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), accusing them of failing to promote and decorate them with new ranks despite their promotions being approved by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The officers filed a suit at the National Industrial Court in Abuja, seeking the implementation of their promotions.

The (NPF) officers allege that the IGP has refused to comply with the decision of the PSC’s 19th plenary session, which granted their promotions in accordance with the Police Service Commission Act.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, Justice R.B. Haastrup heard arguments from the claimants’ counsel, Muka’ila Mavo. Mavo urged the court to order the NPF and the IGP to immediately implement the PSC’s approved promotions, citing Section 6(1)(a) of the Police Service Commission Act and Section 16(3)(a) of the Police Act, which give the PSC authority over appointments, promotions, and disciplinary actions within the police force, excluding the IGP.

Mavo also referenced a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the PSC’s authority over police promotions.

In response, the NPF’s counsel, ACP Isa Garba, refrained from commenting on the matter, suggesting that the Force’s Public Relations Officer would be in a better position to provide further details.

The court adjourned the case to December 18 for further hearing.
