The lawmaker, noted that he was donating the educational materials such as exercise books, text books, just to boost the learning morale of the pupils and to support their parents in the task of providing basic school needs .
Okanlawon noted that in the year 2020, he constituted a seven-man committee lead by Barr. Moyosore Ogunlewe, now the Executive Chairman of Kosofe Local Government and they came up with recommendations which itemised the challenges that were bedeviling education in the constituency.
“I have to rise up to the occasion and address decisively the committee’s recommendations one by one and one, an integral part of which is the need for us to support our students both in the primary and secondary schools.
“There is also need for us to offer our shoulder of assistance for the needy to lean upon and that is what we have commenced with the primary schools pupils and by the grace of God, in few weeks time, we shall move to secondary schools.
We have just started with more than seven schools today and in the next few weeks or months, we would have covered all the schools in this constituency.
“We are doing a lot of things in the realm of education, presently we have a bus that ply Maryland and Ojota helping pupils and students in the area of transportation,” he said.
Okanlawon promised to inaugurate a computer laboratory in few of the primary schools that they had already have set up in this constituency.
The lawmaker said the idea was to develop their pupils in the area of ICT because the world had gone digital and at the cradle level they must be getting acquainted with the nitty-gritty of digitalisation.
He adde d that he would be offering scholarships to his constituents at tertiary institutions of their choice by the end of October.
“This scholarship will take care ot their wellbeing, their books, tuition fees while in schools and will go a long way to assuage the pains of parents paying tuition fees and taking care of their wards while in school.
“I am doing this personally because government cannot do it all, it needs the concerted effort of people like us and philanthropists. Nigeria of our dream is achievable if we contribute our quota to the development of this country,” he said.
The humane lawmaker while conversing with some of the pupils also attended to other basic needs like uniforms and even health care to further ensure the self esteem of the affected pupils gets a boost.
Speaking earlier, the Education Secretary, Kosofe Education Local Authority, Mr. Babatunde Soneye, appreciated the lawmaker for the kind gesture of distributing educational materials to pupils in the council.
Soneye noted that the gesture would go a long way in helping the pupils in writing their subjects in their classes.
He said most of the parent were less-privileged and they believe government had to provide everything that their children need in the school.
Mrs Ifeoma Okeke, the School Manager, Muslim Mission Nursery and Primary School, Oworoshoki, Kosofe LG, urged other well-meaning Nigerians to assist pupils in public schools with education materials.
“I feel excited about these gesture because most of these parents cannot afford a single exercise books for their wards.
“By this gesture, the pupils will be able to write and follow up with their colleagues. The lawmaker was able to give money to procure new uniforms for pupils whose uniforms look tattered,” she said.
Okeke said inadequate classrooms were responsible for the overpopulated pupils in a classroom.
She said: “The school doesn’t have enough classrooms and when the environment is not conducive enough it poses a lot of challenge to learning.
“For example, class A and B are in the same class which shouldn’t be, we can only appeal to the authorities to provide for more classroom building.”
Mrs Veginia Nwamaka, Head Teacher, Mosafejo Nursery and Primary School, Oworoshoki, Kosofe, thanked the lawmaker for distributing the writing materials to the pupils personally.
Nwamaka said the teachers and the pupils were overwhelmed for this kind gesture by the lawmaker.
