Two suspected armed robbers have been set ablaze by an angry mob beside the Conoil Filling Station, Onitsha, Anambra State.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday on the Awka-Enugu Road.
An eyewitness, who asked not to be identified, said the suspects, who came on a motorcycle, robbed some Awada residents of their money and phones, among other items, and shot several times in the air to scare people before trying to escape.
The source said luck ran out on the robbers when residents noticed that they had exhausted their bullets.
It was gathered that the mob chased the robbers and captured them at the MCC Junction, Onitsha, where they placed the motorcycle on them and set them on fire.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Eworo, who confirmed the incident, urged residents to shun mob action.
Eworo, who frowned on such acts, commended members of the public who always assisted the police in apprehending suspected criminals.
He said, “Information revealed that in the early hours of Thursday, the unidentified armed suspects, operating on a motorcycle, robbed some persons at Awada.
“An angry mob chased them when they discovered that the robbers had run out of bullets. They accosted the suspects on Oraifite Street by Ogbo Bread Junction and set them ablaze with their motorcycle.”
