Farmers lose 1,750 hectares of farmlands; 183 households displaced, as flood causes havoc in Adamawa
Many residents of Adamawa State are counting their losses as flood causes havoc after the release of water from the Kiri Dam in Shelang Local Government Area, destroying 1,750 hectares of farmlands, and displacing 183 households in the state.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Friday confirmed the destruction of 1,750 hectares of farmland and displacement of 183 households in Numan Local Government Area, Adamawa State, by flood.
The Head of Operations, NEMA in Adamawa and Taraba states, Ladan Ayuba, in a media interaction on Friday in Yola, stated that most of the affected farmlands were areas that rice is cultivated in commercial quantity.
Ladan Ayuba highlighted: “The flood which occurred on August 9 happened due to the release of water from the Kiri Dam in Shelang Local Government Area.
”183 households were displaced in Kwame Lurei and Gwalam towns in the area. No life was lost in the incident.”
Ayuba added that the agency conducted an on-the-spot assessment in the affected communities and would soon provide relief materials for the victims.
Ayuba stated: “We will soon provide relief measures to the victims.
“NEMA is working with the state Emergency Management Agency to provide the displaced persons who have been accommodated in primary school buildings in the area with basic needs.
“We have provided food items and clothing to the victims as a temporary relief.”
