Vice President Kashim Shettima convened the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, marking the first gathering since February 20th.

The meeting, however, is not without its share of controversy, notably the presence of Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas.

The appointment of sole administrators, particularly in a democratic setting, has been a subject of legal contention, as they are not constitutionally recognized.

This has raised eyebrows and generated debate regarding the legitimacy of Ibas’s participation in the NEC meeting.

Despite this controversy, the NEC meeting proceeded with a substantial attendance of state governors. Among them were Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara and Nigeria Governors’ Forum Chairman), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Alex Otti (Abia), and Bassey Otu (Cross River).

The agenda for the meeting saw a shift in focus from the previously emphasized Nutrition 774 Initiative to the pressing issue of escalating insecurity across the nation.

This change underscores the severity of the security challenges facing Nigeria and the urgent need for coordinated action.

Notably, the highly anticipated debate on state police, a subject of significant national discussion, was deferred.

NEC members cited the necessity for a more comprehensive report before engaging in further deliberations on the matter.

This deferral indicates the complexity of the issue and the need for thorough analysis before any decisions are made.

The NEC meeting, therefore, centered on addressing the growing security concerns, with governors and relevant stakeholders discussing potential strategies and collaborative efforts to mitigate the rising insecurity.

The presence of Ibok-Ete Ibas, despite the controversy surrounding his position, added an element of political tension to the discussions.

The outcome of the NEC meeting is expected to have significant implications for the nation’s security architecture and the ongoing debate regarding state policing.

As Nigeria grapples with increasing insecurity, the decisions made during this meeting will be closely watched by citizens and political analysts alike.
