Outrage as Plateau model dies after mob assault over missing iPhone

Public outrage has erupted following the death of a popular model in Plateau State after he was allegedly beaten by a mob over accusations of stealing an iPhone, reigniting concerns over the growing incidence of mob justice in Nigeria.

The victim, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as Ibee, reportedly died after sustaining severe injuries during the attack in the Ring Road area of Jos North Local Government Area on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

According to reports, Mbaya, a chef and contestant in the Mr. and Miss Glam Nigeria 2026 competition, was accused of stealing an iPhone.

Witnesses said he denied the allegation, but the situation allegedly escalated when a group of people attacked him instead of handing him over to law enforcement authorities for investigation.

He was reportedly assaulted with various objects before being rushed to a hospital in Jos for treatment. Despite medical efforts to save his life, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians demanding that those responsible be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

The tragic death has also renewed calls for an end to mob justice, with rights advocates stressing that criminal allegations should be handled through the justice system rather than through vigilante violence.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official statement on the incident or announced any arrests in connection with the alleged assault. Police investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding Mbaya’s death.
