Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has publicly endorsed Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, for the Ogun State governorship, in a move that could reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
The endorsement was made during a high-level gathering in Lagos, where Dangote expressed strong confidence in the lawmaker’s leadership and economic vision. Addressing Adeola directly, he declared, “We endorse you 100 percent,” signaling rare and explicit support from one of Nigeria’s most influential business figures.
Adeola, who currently represents Ogun East in the Senate under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is widely regarded as a key contender in the race to succeed the incumbent governor.
Political analysts say Dangote’s endorsement could strengthen Adeola’s appeal, particularly among voters focused on economic growth, industrial expansion, and job creation.
Ogun State is often described as a major industrial hub in Nigeria, hosting several large-scale investments, including facilities linked to the Dangote Group. Observers note that Dangote’s backing may signal confidence in Adeola’s capacity to sustain and expand such investments.
Dangote is generally known for maintaining a cautious distance from partisan politics. His direct endorsement of a governorship aspirant is therefore seen as significant, reflecting a strong alignment with Adeola’s development agenda.
Adeola, who previously served as senator for Lagos West before returning to Ogun State politics, has built a reputation around fiscal policy and legislative experience.
The development comes as the APC in Ogun State navigates internal positioning ahead of the next election cycle. Party insiders say the endorsement could influence alignments within the party and boost Adeola’s standing among stakeholders.
At the event, Adeola reiterated his commitment to strengthening the state’s internally generated revenue and improving infrastructure to support industrial growth.
With early political maneuvering already underway, Dangote’s endorsement is expected to add momentum to Adeola’s campaign as the 2027 governorship race gradually takes shape.
