The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered the immediate dismissal and prosecution of police officers implicated in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision followed an expedited review conducted by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) over the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the committee identified ASP Nuhu Usman as the principal officer responsible for the shooting.
The committee found that the officer acted in gross violation of Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms by police personnel, describing the conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and contrary to the duty of the police to protect lives.
Following the findings, the Inspector-General approved the recommendation for the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable in the incident.
Police authorities disclosed that the recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for formal ratification, after which the affected officers will be handed over for criminal prosecution.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power and extrajudicial actions by personnel.
In the statement, the police leadership stressed that no officer has the right to take a life outside the provisions of the law, warning that any personnel found violating established rules would face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the late Mene Ogidi, assuring them and the public that the Force remains committed to ensuring justice and accountability in the matter.
He further urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens.
