Liverpool not weakened by lack of transfer business — Slot

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has dispelled the belief that a lack of signings in the summer transfer window will hinder his side from challenging for the title or be competitive in the new season.

Slot arrives from Dutch Eredevisie side Feyenoord and has inherited a strong side from predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, but has not added to the squad despite the exits of Thiago Alcantara, Adrián and Joël Matip.

Media reports linked the Merseysiders to Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi but the player pledged his loyalty to the La Liga club.

During his press conference ahead of his team’s opening Premier League game against the promoted Ipswich Town, Slot, insisted he does not necessarily have to buy new players, adding that the team is not weaker.

“Jürgen left the team in a good place,” Slot noted as reported by several football websites in the UK.

“I said many times our squad is really strong and it’s not easy to find players who can strengthen us.”

Liverpool attempted to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi, but a failed pursuit left them without a signing as the Premier League season begins.

Slot confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the player who was told by his Spanish club of reluctance to sanction his sale.

“Zubimendi was one [to strengthen the squad] but unfortunately he decided not to come.”

“[Liverpool signing directors] did every effort to get Zubimendi to come in but if a player doesn’t want to come…”

Zubimendi is on a weekly wage of 57 thousand pounds but Liverpool were ready to almost triple it with an offer of 150 thousand pounds.
