NDLEA seizes 709.979kg of illicit drugs, arrests 129 suspects in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has seized a total of 709.979kg of illicit substances in the month of October, the agency reported on Wednesday.

The seizure includes 309.991kg of cannabis sativa and various psychotropic drugs such as 741,600 tablets of Tramadol, 2.789kg of pregabalin, and 0.027kg of methamphetamine.

According to a statement from the NDLEA’s Kano Command Spokesperson, ASN Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the state’s commander, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, also revealed that 129 suspects were arrested in connection with drug-related offenses.

All of the arrested suspects are male.

“The total illicit substances recovered under the period is 709.979kg, which includes 309.991kg of cannabis sativa and 394.835kg of various psychotropic substances,” said Commander Idris-Ahmad.

In addition to the seizures, the NDLEA secured 22 convictions during the same period, underscoring the agency’s commitment to enforcing the law and deterring criminal activity related to drugs.

“These convictions serve as a deterrent to those involved in drug-related activities and highlight our dedication to upholding the law,” Idris-Ahmad added.

The commander also assured that those arrested have been properly profiled. While some will face prosecution in court, others have been referred to the agency’s counseling unit for rehabilitation.

Commander Idris-Ahmad commended the NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Retired Brigadier General Mohammed Marwa, for his consistent support, which has been instrumental in the agency’s recent successes.

He also expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government and other key stakeholders for their cooperation in the fight against drug abuse.

“The command will continue to work tirelessly in collaboration with all other stakeholders to combat drug trafficking and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse,” he stated.

The NDLEA Commander called on the public to actively participate in the battle against drug abuse and trafficking by reporting suspicious activities to the agency’s dedicated hotline: 0800 1020 3040.

“Together, we can build a healthier and safer society,” he concluded.
