The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday officially welcomed its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as she moved into her office amidst a show of solidarity by members of the Assembly.

This marked a pivotal moment following the recent impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Meranda’s emergence as Speaker comes in the wake of Obasa’s impeachment on January 13 over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The transition has sparked political intrigue, as Obasa has publicly challenged the legality of his removal, describing it as unconstitutional.

The atmosphere at the Assembly complex on Monday was tense but controlled, with security personnel stationed at strategic points to maintain order and forestall any potential disruptions.

Observers noted the conspicuous absence of Obasa, who has yet to accept the Assembly’s decision.

Despite the security concerns, Meranda received a warm reception as lawmakers rallied around her. Members of the Assembly were seen taking photographs with the new Speaker, a gesture symbolizing unity and support for her leadership.

The acting Clerk of the Assembly also joined in the celebrations, marking the official commencement of Meranda’s tenure.

Mojisola Meranda’s ascent to the position of Speaker has been lauded by some lawmakers and political analysts as a step toward restoring accountability within the legislative arm of Lagos State.

Political commentator Adeyemi Ogundipe remarked, “This change in leadership represents an opportunity for the Lagos State House of Assembly to rebuild trust with the public. The allegations against the former Speaker had cast a shadow over the institution, and it’s crucial for the new leadership to uphold transparency and integrity.”

Another analyst, Dr. Funmi Adelakun, highlighted the significance of Meranda’s appointment, stating, “Mojisola Meranda’s position as Speaker is not just a victory for the Assembly but also for the values of good governance. Her leadership will be closely watched as she navigates this critical period.”

The impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, has drawn mixed reactions from the political landscape in Lagos. While some have supported his removal, citing the need for accountability, others have questioned the procedures leading to his ousting.

In a statement on Saturday, Obasa rejected the impeachment, claiming it violated constitutional protocols. His absence from the Assembly on Monday, however, signaled a potential reluctance to engage in a direct confrontation.

Legal expert Barrister Tunde Okafor commented on the situation, stating, “The legality of the impeachment hinges on adherence to due process. If Obasa’s claims of unconstitutional proceedings hold water, we may see a legal battle unfold in the coming weeks.”

Addressing lawmakers and staff at the Assembly complex, Speaker Meranda emphasized the need for unity and collaboration to achieve the legislative goals of Lagos State.

She called on all members to set aside differences and focus on the task of delivering quality governance to the people.

“This is a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly. I urge everyone to work together in harmony as we serve the people of our great state,” Meranda stated.
