Tensions mount as Lagos Assembly tightens security ahead of Obasa’s planned resumption
The Lagos State House of Assembly has significantly increased its security measures ahead of the anticipated return of Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the House, who has vowed to resume his position despite being replaced.
In a notice issued on Sunday, January 26, 2025, the Acting Clerk of the House, Omotayo Adekemi, outlined strict protocols for all staff and legislative aides entering the assembly complex.
“All staff members and legislative aides must present valid Identity Cards to access the House premises. Entry will be denied to anyone without a valid Identity Card,” the notice read, emphasizing the management’s directive to ensure a controlled and secure environment.
Obasa was impeached during his absence in the United States and replaced by the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who now serves as the new Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly. Upon his return to Lagos, Obasa declared his removal as unconstitutional and vowed to resume his duties on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Ikeja lodge after meeting with supporters and associates, Obasa stated: “My impeachment did not follow due process. I remain the legitimate Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and I will resume my duties as scheduled.”
In response to Obasa’s planned return, Speaker Mojisola Meranda has ordered a bolstering of security across the House of Assembly premises. Security operatives have been placed on high alert to prevent any potential disruptions or violence by supporters of the impeached Speaker.

A source close to the assembly revealed that Meranda requested the replacement of officers from the various security agencies stationed within the complex, describing the move as a precautionary step to maintain order.
“The security operatives have been directed to ensure strict access control and prevent any disorderliness,” the source said.
The Acting Clerk’s notice further instructed all staff and aides to comply with the tightened protocols to ensure smooth operations during the resumption of legislative activities.
Obasa’s impeachment came as a surprise to many, as it was executed swiftly during his absence. Critics and legal experts have raised questions about the constitutionality of the process, fueling the controversy surrounding his removal.
Political analysts suggest that Obasa’s defiance and planned resumption could lead to a legal and political showdown within the assembly, further intensifying tensions among legislators and their supporters.
As Monday approaches, all eyes are on the Lagos State House of Assembly to see how events will unfold. The heightened security measures underscore the assembly’s determination to prevent any disruptions while maintaining order.
Meanwhile, Obasa’s supporters are expected to rally behind him, setting the stage for a potentially contentious political battle.
The coming days will reveal whether Obasa’s claims of unconstitutional removal hold legal merit or whether the assembly’s leadership transition will remain intact under Mojisola Meranda.
