Obasa Drags Lagos Assembly to Court, Challenges Removal.

In an unprecedented move, The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, RT. Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly itself, contesting his recent removal from office. Obasa, a position he has held like his birthright, Obasa filed a suit against the Assembly on Monday, seeking to reverse his ousting, which he claims was orchestrated through unconstitutional procedures.

The crisis began earlier this month when a majority of lawmakers in the Assembly voted to remove Obasa, citing issues surrounding leadership and governance. The Former Speaker, however, strongly disagreed with the process, arguing that the necessary constitutional steps were not followed in his removal. According to Obasa’s legal team, the action was a violation of the Assembly’s internal rules and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which dictates the appropriate procedures for the removal of a sitting speaker.

Obasa, who has been a prominent figure in the Lagos political scene, insists that the motion for his removal lacked the required support and was politically motivated. In his suit, he has asked the court to declare the decision to remove him as illegal, restore him to office, and issue an injunction to prevent any further actions that would infringe on his constitutional rights.

The legal challenge is already attracting significant attention, not just because of the drama surrounding the power struggle, but also due to the influence Obasa holds within the state’s political machinery. As a long-serving speaker, he has overseen several legislative actions and has been at the forefront of many decisions shaping Lagos’ governance.

Legal experts predict that the case could set an important precedent for future legislative disputes, particularly in the face of rising tensions and political maneuvering in state assemblies across the country.
