Lagos gets first female speaker – Mojisola Meranda
Mudashiru Obasa has been impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and Mojisola Meranda, the first female Speaker, has been sworn in immediately following the controversial move.
In an immediate move, Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa State Constituency I, was elected as Obasa’s successor. Meranda, who took her oath of office immediately, will serve as the first female Speaker of the Lagos legislature.
Additionally, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, the Deputy Chief Whip, has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
The impeachment follows a series of controversies surrounding Obasa, particularly his recent comments regarding the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.
Meranda has long been recognized for her commitment to advancing the rights and welfare of her constituents, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
Before rising to the position of Speaker, Meranda demonstrated strong leadership and a deep understanding of legislative processes.
Her advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment has earned her respect among her peers and the broader community.

Her appointment as Speaker represents a significant breakthrough in Lagos’ political history, as she becomes the first woman to hold such a position in the state’s legislative body.
Meranda’s leadership is seen as an inspiration to many women aspiring to break barriers in the political arena.
Her tenure promises to bring a fresh perspective to the House, focusing on transparency, accountability, and fostering collaborative efforts to address the pressing issues facing the state.
