The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced its decision to abstain from the nationwide protests slated for June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
The move, made public yesterday, June 9, by the group’s Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, is primarily aimed at safeguarding the lives and properties of Igbo people residing across the South-East region.
Isiguzoro emphasized that this withdrawal should not be misconstrued as apathy towards national issues or the democratic process.
Rather, he explained, it is a calculated precautionary measure informed by past experiences.
He highlighted a recurring pattern where the South-East has disproportionately suffered the brunt of violent disruptions during previous demonstrations, resulting in tragic loss of life, extensive business destruction, and a surge in regional insecurity.
June 12, a date of profound national significance, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely acknowledged as Nigeria’s freest and fairest electoral exercise.
It has since evolved into a potent symbol of Nigeria’s enduring struggle for democratic governance.

However, Ohanaeze’s stance underscores a growing sentiment among certain marginalized groups who perceive that political activism often entails a higher cost for their respective communities.
The group has urged its members to maintain peace and adhere to the law, while simultaneously appealing to the federal government to address the underlying causes of widespread discontent in the nation, rather than resorting to the suppression of public expression.
The decision has elicited a spectrum of reactions, with some commending the group’s prudence and others raising questions about the long-term ramifications for national unity and the efficacy of collective civil resistance.
As June 12 draws nearer, attention is now focused on the unfolding of the planned protests in other parts of the country and whether the absence of the South-East bloc will diminish the overall momentum of the movement.
