Ahead of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning about alleged plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to disrupt the voting process and undermine democracy.

Chris Osa Nehikhare, Edo State’s Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, delivered a detailed statement during a press conference on September 15, calling on federal authorities and international organizations to intervene.

Nehikhare accused the APC of orchestrating a wide range of activities aimed at manipulating the election, including the use of police forces, militants, and impersonators to create chaos at polling units.

According to the PDP, these actions are designed to favor the APC, particularly in areas where the ruling party lacks significant support.

PDP alleges that out-of-state police officers have been deployed to arrest key PDP figures in constituencies where the party holds strong influence.

Nehikhare described this as a tactic to intimidate and weaken the PDP’s electoral strength, labeling it “irresponsible and reprehensible.”

Intelligence gathered by the PDP reportedly uncovered the production of police uniforms and masks by APC agents.

These uniforms, the party claims, will be used to disguise thugs who will disrupt voting in areas where the APC faces a tough battle. A recent incident involving an APC chieftain allegedly donning one of these uniforms raised further concern, with police offering no accountability.

Nehikhare disclosed a plot to use approximately 200 militants, recruited by a House of Representatives member from the Ovia Constituency, to interfere with election materials and officials in Edo’s riverine regions.

The militants, already lodged in hotels, are allegedly prepared to target Ologbo, Nikorogha, and Siluko areas.

A critical aspect of the PDP’s concerns is the planned withdrawal of security forces attached to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Nehikhare warned that leaving the governor without protection would render him vulnerable during the election, compromising his ability to ensure a free and fair process.

The PDP also alleged that Senator Adams Oshiomhole plans to collaborate with local police commanders to control polling units near his residence in Iyamho.

The PDP claims this would allow him to manipulate ballot papers, as they reported occurred in previous elections, where discrepancies between accreditation and recorded votes were identified.

Nehikhare named Okpella, Lampese, Fugar, Ibillo, and Agenebode as areas where the APC, using veiled thugs, intends to disrupt the electoral process. These locations are key PDP strongholds.

The press conference also highlighted alleged gatherings of thugs in Egor Local Government, reportedly shielded by local police, to interfere with voting operations.

The PDP is urging President Bola Tinubu to take swift action and instruct security agencies, particularly the police, to ensure the safety of Edo residents and protect their right to a free, fair, and credible election.

The party also called on international organizations, including the United States, the European Union, and ECOWAS, to apply pressure on the federal government to prevent electoral malpractice.

Nehikhare’s appeal reflects a heightened sense of urgency as the governorship election approaches, with the PDP determined to prevent any form of voter intimidation or electoral manipulation.
