President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has strongly condemned the killing of a group of travelling hunters who were intercepted and murdered by local vigilantes in the Uromi community of Esan North-East Local Government Area, Edo State.
Expressing deep shock over the gruesome act, the President, on Thursday, directed the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to conduct an urgent and comprehensive investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killings and ensure that the perpetrators face justice.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, assuring them that the Nigerian government would not allow criminal elements to take innocent lives without consequences.
He emphasized that every Nigerian has the fundamental right to travel and reside freely in any part of the country without fear of harm or persecution.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, stressing that jungle justice and extrajudicial killings have no place in a civilized society.
He called on community leaders, security agencies, and citizens to work together to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Furthermore, President Tinubu commended the swift intervention of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and traditional leaders in Uromi for their efforts in calming tensions and preventing further violence in the community.
He assured Nigerians that the government remains resolute in its mission to maintain peace and protect all law-abiding citizens across the nation.
The incident in Uromi has sparked widespread concern, with human rights advocates and security analysts calling for improved oversight and regulation of local vigilante groups to prevent unlawful killings and ensure justice for victims of such tragedies.
The security agencies have pledged to act swiftly in line with the President’s directive to bring those responsible to book.
